ISLANDERS are being invited to take part in a pink-themed fundraising run this September in memory of a “bubbly”, Peppa Pig-loving three-year-old.

Emily Scarlett Guerreiro Freitas, who lived with epilepsy, cerebral palsy and other complex conditions, died in June 2021.

Though she was tube-fed and unable to walk or talk, her “sassy” personality and love of cuddles left a lasting impression on everyone around her.

“In her short but unforgettable life, she brought endless joy, love, and sparkle to those around her,” her sister, Wendy Freitas (22), said.

Last year, Wendy set out on a challenge to walk and run 200km to raise money for Jersey Children’s Charity in memory of her little sister.

She was nominated for a Pride of Jersey award in 2024 for her fundraising, which many followed via her @milesforem Instagram account. Online, she described both her progress on her runs, not shying away from sharing her “worst run so far”, and her memories of Emily.

This year, she wants to see more people get involved and has founded ‘Miles that Matter’, which encourages people to fundraise through a 5K and a 10K run.

But, far from a regular fun run, this one comes with a special theme in tribute to Emily, with runners asked to turn up in pink clothing or fancy dress.

“Emily loved everything pink and Peppa Pig,” Wendy explained.

While she also “loved cuddles” and having her hair braided, this only ever came second to watching her favourite show – and, if someone blocked the TV while she was watching, “you’d know about it!” Wendy laughed.

While she said Miles that Matter would be “fun and lighthearted”, she said she hoped it would still “bring awareness to” the unique challenges that children with complex needs and their families can go through.

Scheduled for 6 September, the race welcomes those of all ages and abilities and the full ticket price will go towards the Jersey Children’s Charity, which support families of children with disabilities.

The charity was a great support to Wendy’s family, helping them navigate hospital visits and visits to Southampton, get medical equipment, and guiding them through the health system.

They also work with Robin Ward, where Emily was treated.

Both distances are due to start and finish at La Frégate. The 10K route takes runners to St Aubin and back, and the 5K route turns around at the halfway mark.
