THE owners of a bible from the 19th century are hoping to return it to Jersey and find any living relatives of the Syvret family it once belonged to.

Walter Prescott, who lives in Bromsgrove, contacted the JEP wanting to re-home the bible which was passed down to his late wife from her grandmother, who was born Edith May Syvret in St Helier in 1891.

The holy book was first presented on the marriage of Edith’s parents, John William Syvret and Lydia Rebecka Phillips at their wedding at St Luke’s Church in 1889.

It also details the names of Edith’s five siblings, each born in Guernsey – Bessie May Rebecca Syvret, Henry Charles Syvret, Elizabeth Jane Syvret, William John Syvret and George Herbert Syvret.

Having kept the large book in his possession since 1970, Mr Prescott now wants to return the Bible to any living relatives of his late wife’s grandmother in Jersey – who went on to mother six children in the island.

“It’s an outside chance [of finding any relatives],” said Mr Prescott, who has never been to the island himself.

“My family discussed what we should do and my son suggested we try and reach out to the Syvret family in Jersey,” he added.

“We couldn’t find any direct descendants from records so we thought we would ask the public this way [through local news].”
