ISLANDERS are being invited to take part in a series of events celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture this week.
Charity Friends of Africa Jersey is once again bringing a host of educational and entertaining events in the run-up to Africa Day on Sunday 25 May.
It forms part of Africa Awareness Week, which aims to promote diversity and inclusion through a number of activities offered to Islanders for free.
It is also a chance for Jersey’s African-Caribbean community to join together and share their culture with the island.
A Friends of Africa Jersey spokesperson said: “Live performances, painting workshops and an evening mixer are all on the agenda.
“Join us for a vibrant and inspiring week of events highlighting African and Caribbean culture, heritage, wellness, and community empowerment.
“From school workshops to music, fashion, and our signature gala dinner, there’s something for everyone!”
The week launched on Monday with a focus on mental health, including a wellness workshop in partnership with Mind Jersey.
The session offered support and advice on managing mental wellbeing, particularly for people living away from their country of origin – something organisers say can carry its own emotional challenges.
On Tuesday, the focus turned to education, with the charity delivering workshops in local primary schools.
The aim, according to organisers, is to introduce young students to the “richness and diversity” of African and Caribbean cultures.
Celebrations will also take place this Thursday and Friday in Royal Square, featuring live music, fashion shows, food, dance and market stalls between 4pm to 8:30pm.
Friday will also include Afro Fusion Night at Bar Nautique (formerly Vittoria/Mimosa), featuring Afrobeats, R&B and hip-hop from 9pm.
Africa Week will close on Saturday with the 10th Annual Africa Day Dinner.
The event, which begins at 7pm at the Pomme d’Or, will focus on the themes of equity, inclusion and diversity.
Guests are invited to wear either black tie or traditional African or Caribbean dress.
