Following the 80th anniversary of Jersey’s Liberation, residents who lived in the Island during the Occupation have been reflecting on their time and experiences during the war.

Shirley Crosby (née Vibert) was a resident of Arden Lodge, in Trinity, with her parents during the Occupation. The original owners of the property had fled the Island, leaving the Vibert family to care for the house in their absence.

On 9 May 1945, a six-year-old Shirley and her family captured a photograph of her in their garden to commemorate the momentous occasion.

Eighty years later, the current residents of the property welcomed Shirley and her family back to the gardens, fulfilling her wish of recreating the iconic picture to mark the anniversary.

Shirley said that she wanted to re-enact the photo to emphasise Jersey’s journey from Occupation to freedom.

Lynda Allo, Shirley’s daughter, said that during their recent visit to Arden Lodge, her mother had been “reminiscing” on her time living at the property.

She said that her mother had been sharing memories and anecdotes for the very first time and that she was “opening up more” and telling stories that she’d previously never spoken about following their visit to Arden Lodge.
