DECISIONS about taking away driving licences have been described as “difficult” by the chair of the Constables’ Committee, who has confirmed that independent medical advice is sought as part of the process.

Constable Mike Jackson took a question in the States Assembly from Deputy Kirsten Morel on behalf of the committee about licences, which are issued to drivers from parish halls.

Deputy Morel asked if any GPs were contracted or retained by the parishes in order to conduct medical assessments about fitness to drive.

Mr Jackson said GPs were not used, with an alternative process in place.

It would not be appropriate to involve a GP due to the close relationship with patients, he said, which was why the parishes used an independent medical professional, who also worked with the States of Jersey Police to carry out assessments.

The Constable added that in his opinion the process worked well, and it was usually possible to complete an assessment within a week.

But he added: “This is an area which exercises Constables regularly and is a difficult decision.

“The last thing we wish to do is to remove someone’s licence, but we must be cognisant of safety on the roads and that’s why we take professional advice.”
