THE police are investigating an alleged assault by a patient on members of staff at the General Hospital.
Two employees required treatment at the Emergency Department as a result of the attack on Tuesday evening, which was described as “brutal” by one member of staff.
“It was an awful incident, one of the guys was punched in the head and then kicked when he was on the floor, and he ended up needing a CT scan and x-ray,” said an employee who contacted the JEP. “It’s a terrible thing to have happened – you don’t come to work to get assaulted.”
A spokesperson for States of Jersey Police confirmed that officers had been called to a ward at the General Hospital at around 9.15pm on Tuesday, and that the incident was being investigated. No further details about the investigation were immediately available.
On behalf of the Health Department, a spokesperson said: “We treat any assault against a member of staff very seriously and have a zero-tolerance approach to attacks or harassment on our colleagues.
“Sometimes unfortunately assaults may occur in the context of a person being acutely unwell, rather than deliberate behaviour.
“Any assaults on our staff while performing their duties will be reported to the States of Jersey Police, and where appropriate sanctions will be taken.
“If staff are affected by assault, we will support them to access a range of staff support, counselling, and wellbeing services to support their recovery.”
The JEP has requested an update about the condition of the two members of staff who were injured.
