MOTORISTS faced an unhappy return to the working week yesterday, with congestion and roadworks described by one observer as some of the worst he could recall.
A wet Monday morning and the return to school after half-term compounded a lengthy list of roadwork projects that left traffic in St Helier moving at a snail’s pace.
Last week brought confirmation that the closure of part of Rouge Bouillon as a result of a sinkhole that opened in December would remain in place until after Easter, while Snow Hill and La Colomberie would be closed as a result of urgent gas works.
And yesterday the government confirmed that improvement works on New Street, due to be complete by 30 April, would now extend until 27 June, apologising to Islanders for the inconvenience.
Veteran DJ Peter Mac, who does regular travel bulletins for Channel 103, said recently that the scale of the traffic issues in St Helier was the worst he could recall.
“I’ve been doing travel bulletins for a very long time, and at no point do I remember so many roadworks at any one time,” he said.
Closed roads chaos
Other works currently taking place in St Helier include:
– Rue du Moulin de Fliquet and Grande Route de St Jean – until 28 February.
– Route de St Aubin – until 26 February. Described as “emergency activity due to a network fault”.
– Westmount Road between Westmount Court and Overdale – until 29 March. Described as “replacement of switchgear”.
