A 45-YEAR-OLD woman who attacked a teenage girl has been put on probation for a year.
Leena Gurav assaulted the teenager last year, the Royal Court heard.
Crown Advocate Emma Hollywood, prosecuting, said Gurav threw a plastic coat-hanger at the girl before slapping her in the face, hitting her over the head with a water bottle and putting her hands around her neck.
The teenager reported the assault to a teacher at school the following day and she was sent to hospital for assessment – she had bruises on her right shoulder, tenderness to her neck and abrasions on her cheek and wrist.
The advocate suggested a fine of £4,000.
Gurav admitted the assault charge – so avoiding the necessity of a trial where the teenager would have to give evidence – and Advocate Greg Herold-Howes, defending, said she deserved “significant benefit” for that.
He also said that the case could have been dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court.
He said: “Thankfully the injuries were minor and have not been long-lasting in any way. It comes nowhere near the custodial threshold.”
And he argued that the suggested £4,000 was too high, saying: “It is simply not reflective of the offending.”
Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae, sitting with Jurats Cornish and Le Heuzé, said they had agreed to impose a 12-month probation order but not to impose a financial penalty.
