FLOOD, wind and thunderstorm warnings have been issued by Jersey Met.

The red flood warning – the highest level of alert – states that “wind and high tides will lead to large waves coming over the sea walls which are expected to cause flooding along Jersey’s south and east coast on Thursday morning’s high tide. Some coastal roads may need to be closed”.

Jersey Met has also issued a red wind warning, with storm-force-ten winds and gusts of 90mph forecast, as well as a thunderstorm warning.

The shipping forecast, which covers the area from the north Brittany coast to just north of Cherbourg, warns of violent-storm-force-eleven winds with gusts to about 110mph.

Victoria Avenue and Havre des Pas are due to be closed at 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the government has said that retailers have “adequate reserves of food”, despite an apparent surge in panic-buying during the last 24 hours.

The government said: “As Storm Ciarán approaches, with significant disruption expected on Thursday 2 November, we ask Islanders to be respectful of others when purchasing products and to buy responsibly in the shops and supermarkets.

“Jersey’s supply chain has built-in resilience, which means that retailers have adequate reserves of food and we have been liaising with supermarkets to ensure minimal short-term disruption.

“The Commodore Goodwill docked as normal, today (Wednesday) with the usual freight for retailers.

“Government officials have confirmed with retailers that extra goods have been ordered in anticipation of Storm Ciarán and supermarkets expect to be well stocked, including with fresh food for Wednesday.

“Winds are expected to subside on Friday and Islanders are asked to go to gov.je/weather for further updates.”
