THE Chief Minister has been challenged to take part in a live public debate about the hospital project by the politician previously responsible for the scheme.

Deputy Lyndon Farnham has written a letter to Deputy Kristina Moore, suggesting that they broadcast the event using the government’s studio in the Parade.

Deputy Farnham, who held political responsibility for the Our Hospital project under the previous government, said the request was prompted by the publication of a review of the plans.

It recommended abandoning the proposed single-site hospital at Overdale in favour of a hybrid scheme that would also include the existing Gloucester Street site and adjacent land at Kensington Place.

In his letter, Deputy Farnham described the review as ‘vague’ and ‘light on detail’ – arguing that it presented little evidence to support its findings, ‘which were almost wholly subjective’.

‘The public need to be properly informed and, to that end, I would like to invite you to participate in a public debate to discuss and clarify these issues,’ he added.

He suggested the event be overseen by ‘an independent facilitator’ and that questions be invited from the media and the public.

‘Given the high importance of this issue, I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible,’ he wrote.

Speaking to the JEP, he added: ‘The approved Overdale scheme can be delivered far quicker and has the support of clinicians and health staff who have twice rejected a multi-site option. The review takes us back to the beginning and risks years of further delay and unnecessary disruption.’

He said that the purpose of the debate was not to be ‘confrontational’, adding: ‘It is a good opportunity to clarify key issues that Islanders may be confused about following the publication of the review.’
