USC: Questions raised over future of town store

Although there has not been any word about what might go in its place, a planning application to rebuild and enlarge the second floor and refurbish the exterior of the building has been approved.

It was previously reported that the project would cost £4.3 million.

Plans attached to the application show Sports Direct and Flannels signage on the store’s frontage.

USC, Flannels and Sports Direct are all part of Frasers Group – a retail empire owned by Newcastle United Football Club owner Mike Ashley.

The JEP has contacted the company but has not received any response.

The applicant behind the plans is listed as Epoch Properties Ltd which, according to the JFSC registry, has its registered office at Cavendish Fiduciary (Jersey) Ltd at La Chasse Chambers.

Before USC’s arrival in Jersey, the King Street store was occupied by BHS from the late 1960s until the chain’s collapse in August 2016. After this it was revealed that the site had been bought for £18 million and would be turned into Flannels – a high-end clothing store.

Prior to BHS buying the site, the shop was home to Noel and Porter – a department store established in Jersey in the late 1800s. The company occupied an ornate Victorian-era building which was demolished in 1966.
