Plan to lower drink-drive limit

Under the new lower legal drink-drive limit proposed by Deputy Eddie Noel, women could be restricted to just half a pint.

The minister has also said that he expects a penalty points system – similar to the one in operation in the UK – to come into force in 2019 to discourage bad driving.

The measures were announced in the Jersey Road Safety Action Plan 2017-2019, which reported that there are about 60 serious injuries due to road accidents every year and that crashes are estimated to cost the Island £21 million annually.

Currently, the legal drink-drive alcohol limit in Jersey is 80 mg of alcohol to 100 ml of blood. But Deputy Noel says that by 2018 he wants to reduce the alcohol level to 50 mg to 100 ml of blood.
