Dentist forced to sell up to put child through uni

Mark Bennetts (64) is seeking a buyer for his well-established dental practice on Victoria Street after exhausting every avenue to allow his eldest daughter to continue to study Mandarin at Nottingham Trent University.

Mr Bennetts, who has owned Victoria House Dental Surgery since 1980 and has more than 2,000 clients, has told the JEP he will struggle to keep his daughter at university or allow any of his other three children the opportunity if he does not seek further funding.

He said: ‘I have already borrowed all I can to put my first child through university and I cannot deny my other children the opportunity.’

The huge costs faced by Island parents whose children study at university in the UK has repeatedly hit the headlines this year. Many face paying out tens of thousands of pounds over a typical three-year course as there is little or no help available to many families.
