Angela Francey was awarded the medal during a ceremony at Government House on Monday by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl.
Dozens of people attended the ceremony, including Mrs Francey’s friends and family, former internees and the German town’s mayor, Roland Bürkle, as well as Jersey’s Bailiff William Bailhache, Senator Philip Bailhache, St Saviour Constable Sadie Le-Sueur Rennard, Deputy Murray Norton and Education Minister Rod Bryans.
Mrs Francey is the founding chairman and current secretary of the St Helier-Bad Wurzach Partnerschaft Committee – from 1942 to 1945 more than 600 Islanders were interned in a castle in the heart of the small German spa town and in 2002 the two communities became twinned towns after previous attempts at official reconciliation failed.
