Deputy Sam Mezec

Jeremy Corbyn, who won the Labour Party leadership this weekend, will be invited to visit the Island by St Helier Deputy Sam Mézec.

A number of trade unions recently announced that they would be holding a large demonstration opposing the public-sector cuts set out in the Medium-Term Financial Plan which are designed to help plug a predicted £145 million financial shortfall.

The final details of the rally are still being arranged.

Deputy Mézec, who is chairman of the Island’s only political party, Reform Jersey, admitted that he did not necessarily expect Mr Corbyn to accept the invitation, owing to his busy schedule, but said that he hoped the Labour leader would visit Jersey at some point.

He said: ‘I think it would be great for Jeremy Corbyn to come over.

‘He is completely different to any party leader we have seen.

‘He seems to be the sort of person that would not just want to meet the ministerial government but also the political opposition, charities and members of the public.’

Jeremy Corbyn has now announced the majority of the top positions in his first shadow cabinet:

  • His Leadership rival Andy Burnham is shadow home secretary
  • His election campaign manager, John McDonnell, is shadow chancellor
  • Hilary Benn is shadow foreign secretary
  • Angela Eagle is shadow business secretary and shadow first secretary of state
  • Lewisham MP, Heidi Alexander, is shadow health secretary
  • Lord Falconer remains as shadow justice secretary
  • London mayoral candidate Diane Abbott is shadow minister for international development

As addition to the new appointments, there have been a number of resignations from the shadow cabinet:

  • Former shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna said he would leave the front bench by ‘mutual agreement’
  • Shadow health minister Jamie Reed resigned immediately on Twitter after the result was announced
