Mr Crowcroft said the majority of Constables were preparing a response which would object to the plan.

Senator Maclean wants to see all shops being allowed to apply for a permit to open on a Sunday between 10 am to 6 pm during the trial, but Mr Crowcroft said this would mean more noise and traffic for the residents of St Helier, and pressure on shop staff to work weekends.

Currently only shops under 700 square metres are allowed to trade every Sunday. Larger stores can trade on only a handful of Sundays each year.
