The company is considering an investment of up to £60 million in such a ship and is talking to the governments in both islands about their plans for the future of the sea routes network.

The outcome of the talks is likely to determine if Jersey is prepared to grant a long-term operating licence to the company for the carriage of passengers, cars and freight.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that the existing Condor licence was originally due to expire at the end of next year but had already been extended until 2017.
