Pills containing the banned substance PMA are believed to be several times stronger than the ecstasy or MDMA they have been designed to replace. In the past two months, 14 deaths in Scotland and Northern Ireland have been linked to overdoses of PMA.

The killer tablets come in an assortment of colours and are marked with a variety of logos. They have street names such as red Mitsubishi, pink McDonalds, pink ecstasy, Mitsubishi turbo, killer, Dr death, double stacked, chicken fever and green Rolex.

The urgent warning was issued jointly by the Island’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr Susan Turnbull, and the head of the Alcohol and Drug Service, Mike Gafoor.
