Ian Ronayne, who works as an independent telecoms and technology consultant, says that the base-rate speeds offered to residents are not good enough and are much lower than those available elsewhere.

Mr Ronayne said that this meant that many users struggled to carry out simple internet activities, such as watching catch-up television, and has called for the basic package speeds to be improved in line with other jurisdictions.

He was speaking in relation to a graph published by Google which shows Jersey’s average internet speed to be three times slower than the UK’s and almost four times behind the Isle of Man’s.
