A report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons released today also listed concerns about ‘disproportionate’ security practices, in particular the use of strip searches on female prisoners, and care for prisoners at risk of self-harm.

However, chief inspector Nick Hardwick said that the findings were good overall, with outcomes for prisoners ‘reasonably good or better’ than the standard for a healthy prison.

Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand said: ‘There is still much to be done and we will consider the chief inspector’s recommendations very carefully but Jersey now has a prison service it can be proud of and a prison that is most definitely moving in the right direction.’
