The chairman of the commission – which last week published its final report calling for a referendum on political reforms that would cut eight States seats – says that taxpayers’ money should be provided so that each side can make its case to the public before the vote takes place.

He has proposed the Senatorial election spending limit – £8,771 at the last election – as a possible sum to be used. If three groups were established representing the three options that the commission want to be put to the public, the cost would be slightly over £26,000.
