Around 50 States Members and Islanders gathered at the Town Hall yesterday to hear the commission’s provisional recommendations for reform, which include reducing the number of States Members. scrapping the role of Senators and having a referendum to decide on the future of the Constables in the States.

Islanders now have a month to have their say on the recommendations and public meetings will be held in all parishes before a final draft is presented to the States in December.

Addressing the audience at the Town Hall, commission chairman Senator Sir Philip Bailhache said the plans would simplify the system, encourage more people to engage with local politics and make sure that politicians were elected by a more equal number of votes than they are currently.
