When was your first Battle?
My family have always been involved in the Battle and my late mother was chairman of the Battle for a number of years. My daughter Donna has also helped for many years.
How have you been involved since your début?
For the past 31 years I have been involved in the crowd and stewarding side of things. For the last 20 years I have been in charge of the First Tower end of the arena, and I love doing it.
What are you doing this year?
This year is no different – I will be running the First Tower end again.
What’s your favourite thing about the Battle of Flowers
I love the whole of the Battle and love to see the look on everyone’s faces as our great parade starts and the fabulous floats enter the arena. I also love the people I have worked with for many years now, and we all seem to return year after year, as if time stands still.
What was your favourite float to work on?
That has to be the St Brelade float Camelot in 1987, which my late mother and father were involved in. We won the Prix d’Excellence. That’s a good few years ago now, but you never forget.
The best float you’ve seen?
That is very hard, as they are all amazing, but I did love Valhalla – Viking Sacrifice, by the Optimists Club in 2007. I thought that was a fabulous float and it was lit up to wonderful effect in the Moonlight Parade.
Sum up the Battle in three words!
Spectacular, unique, timeless.
