THE sound of music it filled Mont Orgueil on Friday evening.
There was chamber music in the Lower Ward and choirs in the Middle Ward; young musicians in the Great Hall and poetry reading in the Great Chamber; big band and acoustic guitar; and as you walked up or down the steps from one level to the next, everything merged in one curious but not totally un-musical stereophonic effect.
This was the Fête de la Musique – the main musical event of the first day of the Liberation weekend’s Jersey International Music Festival, with 200 musicians doing their various things throughout the castle.
These included the Jersey Festival Choir, Jersey Island Singers, Le Rocquier Big Band, St Ouen’s Ladies’ Choir, Le Ronde Trumpeters, Musical Originals Singers, Well Swung Jazz Orchestra, violinist Nicola Benedetti, members of the Sitkovetsky Trio, Krzysztof Chorzelski, guitarist Justin Thorne . . . every corner seemed to have its own mini-event going on.
