Only 15 minutes after the 200m Individual Medley final, in which the Bath University student finished fifth in a personal best time, Speller was back in the pool to secure third place in the 400m freestyle in 4.31.42 min – knocking three seconds off the record she set last summer.

She also placed fourth in the 400m IM.

Speller’s efforts secured her three National qualifying times for July but there was disappointment as she missed out on qualifying for the Olympic trials by .8 of a second.

HOCKEY: Great Britain are 2-0 down in their current five-test series tour of Australia after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Hockeyroos on Saturday.

Jersey’s Beckie Herbert again started for the GB side, who were said to have given a vastly improved performance after having lost the first test 5-0 on Thursday.

FOOTBALL: JERSEY’S Primary Schools’ footballers are unbeaten after two games of their four-day tour to England.

On Saturday, Jersey defeated Barton Boys (a feeder club to Reading FC) 3-2 while yesterday they featured in a 1-1 draw against Newbury.

Jersey coach Rob Cameron said: ‘The boys have performed well in both games; it was difficult yesterday because conditions were icy and we had a goal ruled out.

‘Paul Hickling was outstanding in the centre of midfield while Ryan Le Couillard scored our goal with a good low strike from just inside a corner of penalty area after some fine worked play down our left hand side.’

ATHLETICS: Jamie Stevenson took advantage of an unexpected invitation to improve his own indoor senior shot putt PB in Sheffield yesterday.

The 18-year-old Loughborough student competed for Bristol in the UK City Challenge final, finishing fourth in the men’s event with 15.93, an improvement of 12 cm on his own record for a Scottish U20 thrower in a senior event.

HOCKEY: Veterans progress – Jersey Hockey Club Veterans beat Oxford City Veterans 10-1 to progress to the last eight of the England Hockey Association Veterans Plate yesterday.

Dave Grant (18 and under handicap) and Peter Vincenti (19 and over) finished top after round three in their respective competitions on Saturday at Les Mielles Golf Club in St Peter.

Grant scored a net 70 off nine handicap while Vincenti totalled 36 Stableford points.

Taylor made! – Mark Taylor won Wheatlands’ Johnson & Johnson Trophy on Saturday at Wheatlands following a net score of 46 off 28 handicap.

The ladies’ winner of the Winter Vase was Pat Creighton with a net 60 off 15 handicap.

Kraggs conquers – Six-handicapper Peter Kraggs, won the St Clement Golf Club’s February Monthly Medal with a fine five-under-par net score of 57.

Malcolm Berridge, 11 hcp, was second with a net 61.

Club captain Andy Wiseman won the Monthly Medal Cup with a net score of 64.

BADMINTON: Inter-county success – Credit Suisse Jersey defeated Guernsey 12-3 in their National Inter-County Championship Division II match in Guernsey yesterday.

The result relegates Guernsey from the division.
