CYCLING – Victory for Vélo rider: Richard Tanguy (VSJ) won the Vélo Sport Jersey Round the Bays race yesterday in 1 hr 45 min, beating CCC’s Chris Spence and Vince Peron by a wheel’s length in what is considered the toughest ride in the calendar.

Kevin Pilley (CCC) was the top veteran and VSJ’s Jim Davis was the top female rider.

TENNIS – Youngest ever winner: Octavia Lamb became the youngest winner of the ladies’ singles at the JP Morgan Grainville Tennis Club Closed tournament this year as the 12-year-old defeated Laura Cuddon Large 6-1, 6-0 in the final on Saturday.

David Baptista won the men’s singles, beating Martin Kirk 6-3, 6-4.

SWIMMING – Third time unlucky? Denise Richards is still waiting to set off on her cross Channel swim but the bad weather could make it the third time in over a year that her bid has failed to get under way.

Anthony Smith’s Jersey to France swim has also been put on hold due to the conditions.

SHOOTING – Bisley Imperial Meeting: Andrew Le Cheminant is facing a shoot off with GB shooter Peter Holden following an excellent 75.14 to share the lead in the Daily Telegraph 500 yard shoot at the Bisley Imperial Meeting.

Topping the table from 1082 entrants, in what was the first shot of the Grand Aggregate event, the high pressured decider takes place this afternoon.

Graham takes top spot: Greg Graham won the C Class and took the High Gun honours with a 45 ex 50 in yesterday’s Lecq Clay Target Club’s 50 Bird Sporting Ashley Davey and Chris Pett shared second in that class with 36.

In the Crill Canavan Cadet Dragoon racing, Laura Jane Carter and Oliver Scott were the winners.

GOLF – Kelly club champion: Neil Kelly (7 hcp) won the Les Ormes GC Championship after a gross 67 on the second round to give him a total of 127.

Shaun Clark (14 hcp) was second on 130 and Stewart Macpherson third on 131.

Club captain Stuart Hainsworth (21 hcp) finished fourth with a nett 66.

Longest drive (14th) was Alan Ferguson and nearest the pin (16th) Derek Rogers.

Player of the day yesterday was Billy Moir (13 hcp) who shot a gross 32 on the front nine.

Captain’s control: La Moye captain John Collins won the Jersey Western Captains Invitation Stableford yesterday as the top guest with 41 points.

Paul Walters was the top Jersey Western player with 39 pts.

Le Duc takes lead David Le Duc, 19 handicap, took the lead after the first round of the Demi Golf Society Club Championship with a nett 57.

Gary Parsons, 11 hcp, was second on 59 and Peter Osment, 13 hcp, third on 61.

La Moye Trophy: Gavin O’Neill recorded a 76 and 67 to win La Moye GC’s La Moye Trophy on Saturday with 143.

Craig Neilson was second on 147 and Richard Ramskill third on 148.

National nines qualify: Wheatlands’ B team won the National nines of Europe CI qualifier on Saturday with a total of 112 at Wheatlands.

The winning team was Allan Black who scored 39; Paul Jones 38 and Dennis Le Breton 35 to record the highest qualifying team score since the competition began.

Top scorer was Gary Kavanagh (Wheatlands C) with 40 pts.

Kemp on form: Ian Kemp won St Clement Golf Club’s July Monthly Medal yesterday with a nett 56, beating Tony Cleworth on a count back.

Meanwhile Jimmy Brown scored the third hole in one of his career using a 4-iron on the sixth.

The feat was witnessed by George Reed, JW Brown and Charlie Lumsden.

SOFTBALL – League results: Inter-divisional: J express Falcons lost to Optimus Storm 16-0; Flyers beat CPA Pirates 28-7; AIB Shamrocks lost to Funseekers Cubs 14-9.

BOWLS – St Brelade win: Men’s Morels League results: St Brelade B beat Jersey Bowls at St Brelade 4-2.

Sun Bowls lost to St Brelade A at Sun BC 4-2.

Team A lost 11-21, B lost 10-21, C won 17-11.

In the ladies’ Le Marquand League, St Brelade drew 2-2 with Jersey Bowls at St Brelade.

Fun day for St Brelade: The winning team at the St Brelade Bowls Club’s Fun Day yesterday was skipped by Joe Maguire with Frank Guillaume, Tom Buckley and Kay Sutcliffe while the wooden spoon team was skipped by Tom Binet with Jose Maguire, Brian Ahier and Mary Noel.

WHIPPET RACING – July handicap meeting: Ideal racing conditions led to some exciting and close-finish races over 100 yards for the Jersey Pedigree Whippet Club’s July Handicap meeting at Le Moye yesterday.

Repeating her win of last season of the same Handicap Trophy was Jack Webster’s petite Skye, with Jan and Jacquie Huet’s Khia very close behind and taking a well-deserved second place.

In third place, running off a tough three-yard handicap, and pipping her to the Veteran of the Day rosette was her brother, Jetstream, owned by Jenny Thomas.

In fourth place was the highly handicapped Coyote (Steve Lawson).

Major John Campbell’s Karnac took the rosette for consolation race winner.
