The new group, called Appleby Hunter Bailhache, has offices in four of the world’s leading offshore business centres – Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and now Jersey – as well as London and Hong Kong.
The merger, completed on 1 September, came after a strategic internal review by the Island company in 2005 identified the need for an international connection.
Advocate Michael O’Connell (43), the Jersey company’s managing partner, said: ‘After that we looked at a number of possibilities and Appleby Spurling were top of our list – so we approached them.
‘It is a trend in the offshore world for law firms to get larger and this gives us a foothold in the international market and in most offshore jurisdictions.
Clients are looking for a firm which can look after them in all those jurisdictions.
