She told police she was repeatedly punched and kicked by a man who twice got out of a car and assaulted her as she walked down New Street at around 2.15 am on Tuesday.

It is thought the attack was unprovoked.

The 19-year-old victim, who is Madeiran, suffered cuts and bruises to her face and spent the rest of the night in the General Hospital.

Further examination showed that she had suffered a fractured cheekbone.

It is thought she may have known her attacker, who is said to have got out of a silver car, possibly a VW Golf.

After the assault he drove off up Burrard Street.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, but the police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.
