The Leonis youngster notched convincing consecutive first round wins in the southern division finals of the Western Counties championship.

First he beat the experienced Peter Wiffin from Weymouth in his semi-final after Wiffin was forced to take three standing counts at the Riverside Leisure Centre.

And in the final Murray fired a stunning swift right flush onto opponent Ben Zacharkin’s jaw to send the experienced Plymouth man – a former junior and senior ABA quarter finalist – crashing to the canvas.

Leonis super heavyweight Dave Lund is also through to the Western Counties finals.

But the manner of his qualification was disappointing.

Lund, who had got a bye through to Saturday’s final and had put in many hours training for the bout, was on his way to the ring when told that his opponent Mike Elkin had pulled out, claiming he had injured his shoulder in the warm-up.

But there was greater disappointment for the two other Jersey boxers in Exeter.

Heavyweight John McKechnie forced the tall Simon Haddon of Dorchester to take two standing eight counts.

But at the end of the fourth round Haddon was awarded a majority decision – which brought boos from the crowd.

Meanwhile welterweight Paul Young broke his opponent Robin Fernley’s nose but Fernley still took a narrow majority decision.

The two surviving Leonis men will now travel to the Western Counties finals next month.
