Last Saturday they took a team to the Girls Brigade national competitions day at Coventry for the first time – and ended up holding the trophy aloft after they beat Ruislip 7-6 in a tense and thrilling final.
The Island girls – all except two under 13 – earned their final place after they beat last year’s winners Coventry in the semi final.
About 200 Girls Brigade members from all over England, Scotland and Wales were there for a day of various competitions.
The Jersey side went through to the semi-final on goal difference and then beat Coventry 10-4.
The final went goal-for-goal until 11-year-old Emily Heald netted the winner in the dying seconds.
Said team coach and Emily’s mum Louise: ‘We’ve beaten Guernsey for the last two years and decided to send a team to Coventry.
But we didn’t expect to get through to the semi finals.
It was very exciting – although I think the best bit for the girls was meeting Gareth who was staying at the same hotel!’ Team: Goalkeeper Victoria Leighton (capt); goal defence Stephanie Devine, wing defence Charlotte Noel, centre Alana Rondel, wing attack Danielle Pryce, goal attack Sophie Le Bon, goal shooter Emily Heald.
