In the States on Tuesday Sir Philip Bailhache added his voice to protests about the confused use of French and English in regulations passed to enable the transfer to ministerial government.

He went on to emphasise the importance of French culture and language in Jersey at an event held in the Town Hall last night.

Speaking during Tuesday’s States sitting, he said: ‘In terms of retaining Island culture and heritage, franglais should be banned from all laws’ – to which Policy and Resources president Senator Frank Walker replied that he considered himself and others ‘firmly told’.

The Bailiff went on to emphasise the need for Jersey to recognise its official bilingual status last night when he attended a drinks party hosted by L’Alliance Fran?aise de Jersey.

The organisation, of which he is patron, teaches French to States Members, civil servants, students of law and other Islanders.
