Bad Wurzach’s former mayor, Helmuth Morczinietz, and schoolteacher Hermann Bilgeri have been recognised by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, for their work in forging links between the Island and the German town where 618 Islanders were interned during the Occupation.
Sir Philip said: ‘I am pleased to recognise the many years of dedication shown by Mr Bilgeri and Mr Morczinietz towards the formalising of links between our two communities.’ The Deputy Bailiff, Michael Birt, will make the presentation to Mr Bilgeri on Tuesday at the opening of an exhibition of paintings at the Arts Centre by Bad Wurzach artist Sepp Mahler.
The Bailiff had invited Mr Morczinietz and his wife Elizabeth to Jersey for the Liberation celebrations and to attend the States dinner for the Queen and Prince Philip.
Unfortunately the former mayor broke his wrist in a cycling accident this week and had to cancel his trip.
The replica seal, bearing the image of the arms granted to the Island by King Edward I in 1279, is given to individuals or organisations who have made a particular contribution to the life of the Island.
