Claire Byrne, who is married to former 103fm director Richard Johnson, won the public vote in the Irish version of the BAFTAs at a ceremony on Sunday night.

She left 103fm in 1999 for her native Ireland and later became a newsreader on Channel 5 and the ITN News Channel.

In 2001 she returned to Dublin to present TV3’s new breakfast show and became the station’s news anchor in March this year.

Winning the award came as a surprise and in her speech Claire paid tribute to the Island and the station.

‘I was thrilled when it was announced that I had won the award and it made the last ten years of working my way from Ireland to Jersey and back again all worth it.

I paid tribute to Jersey and Channel 103fm in my acceptance speech because I feel that I learned my craft in the Island – and probably made my mistakes there too!’ Claire married Richard Johnson in 2003 in Dublin and the couple live in Kildare.
