The figures are revealed in a proposition brought by St Saviour Deputy Alan Breckon in which he is seeking to have court and case costs examined by an independent UK expert.

His report shows that the States annual legal bill has more than doubled in the last three years and, if approved, the £1.5 million paid to lawyers Mourant, du Feu and Jeune for their advice in the Les Pas case will be among the bills scrutinised.

Deputy Breckon was shocked to see that £3.3 million had been paid from the States general reserve to Finance and Economics for legal costs in March and asked the Treasury for figures going back to 1998.

‘When I saw the figures I was amazed,’ he said.

‘Maybe they are justified and maybe there are good reasons but I think we should open them up to a bit of scrutiny to find out.’
