Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was escorted by a party of around ten officials and security staff, arrived in the Royal Square at 2 pm, where he was greeted by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache.
In welcoming Chief Obasanjo, Sir Philip referred to the Commonwealth links between Nigeria, one of the largest members, and Jersey as one of the smallest.
He also spoke of the 800th anniversary of 1204 and explained its significance.
‘I do not imagine that in the tropical heat of Abuja the year 1204 will have any great resonance, but in this Island it reminds us of the genesis of our unique constitutional status and autonomy,’ he said.
The Bailiff also referred to the time, 60 years ago to the day, when Nazi bombs were dropped on the Island and ‘overwhelming military force’ applied.
‘We have watched from afar with great sympathy as Nigeria was ground down by military dictatorship with unhappy results in terms of poverty, corruption and the suppression of freedom.
‘And we have watched with equal admiration as you, Mr President, following your election in 1999, have begun to turn the tide and to reinstate respect for the independence of the judiciary and respect for human rights and democratic principles.’
