Officers were locked in a stand-off for two hours as negotiators tried to talk the five rioting inmates into giving themselves up.

When the dialogue failed, specially trained officers were sent in to restrain the men.

Three of the five prisoners were injured and needed medical attention as a result of the incident which began at around 5.15 pm, during tea time at the jail.

One of the men, a 25-year-old, needed hospital treatment and was taken by ambulance to Accident and Emergency.

Acting governor at the prison Charles Bertram refused to say what had sparked the disturbance or whether the inmates were injured when officers moved in at around 7 pm.
