Both England and hosts Portugal, which have large support in Jersey, lost in their opening matches of the Euro 2004 Championships.

Portugal lost to Greece 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday, and last night England lost 2-1 to cup holders France, after conceding two goals in the dying minutes.

Spectators packed pubs and bars around the Island to cheer their sides on but were left with the bitter taste of defeat in their mouths.

Manuel da Silva, president of the Portuguese Club in Jersey, said: ‘It was a terrible beginning for us in the tournament.

The press in Portugal are talking about the frustration we encountered with the Greek defence.

I also think there was a lot of pressure on the players with Portugal being the hosts.

‘The Portuguese Club was very busy and although everyone was pretty upset when the Greeks scored after seven minutes, the atmosphere soon picked up towards the end.

However, we are still confident that our team will do well.’ Meanwhile, Former England international Tony Cottee watched the game against France at Blues Brasserie and Wine Bar in Halkett Place.

The ex-West Ham, Everton and Leicester City star, who has seven full England caps, was guest of honour and joined an invited audience of fans.

He was brought to the Island jointly by Ann Street Brewery and Blues for the evening.
