JERSEY’s long-standing connection with HMS Iron Duke – a Royal Navy vessel retired earlier this year – was acknowledged by the Lieutenant-Governor as he outlined hopes for the Island to be affiliated with another warship “in due course”.
Vice-Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, KBE, said Jersey had been “exceptionally proud” of its affiliation with the Type 23 frigate, which has visited the Island on a number of occasions.
In July, the Royal Navy announced that HMS Iron Duke was preparing to leave service alongside HMS Richmond and HMS Chiddingfold, stating that the cost and risk of maintaining older Type 23 frigates was increasing.
“Retiring them now allows reinvestment in the next generation of Type 26 and Type 31 frigates and advanced autonomous capabilities,” the announcement explained.
Jersey’s affiliation with HMS Iron Duke began in 2010.
The Lieutenant-Governor said: “Jersey has been exceptionally proud to have had the frigate, HMS Iron Duke, as our affiliated warship for so many years.”
He continued: “As an Island, we have a deep connection with the sea and the importance of our relationship with the Royal Navy is centuries old.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed Iron Duke’s many visits to the Bailiwick and we sincerely hope that another warship will be formally affiliated to our Island in due course.”
