ISLANDERS have been warned of extensive road closures on Sunday 4 October as runners take on the marathon – with St Ouen and access to the Airport affected.

More than 40 roads are set to be affected during the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, with some closures starting on Saturday – though many will be intermittent during the morning.

In St Helier, 27 roads will be affected – with the Weighbridge the scene of the start and finish of the 42km epic.

They will then follow La Motte Street, King and Queen Street, Seale Street and Seaton Place before joining the St Aubin Inner Road.

On their return, runners will loop around the Waterfront and approach the finish line along Castle Street and Commercial Street.

Access to Pier Road and Fort Regent, as well as parking on the Weighbridge, Mulcaster Street, Hill Street, York Street and Wharf Street will also be affected.

Runners will then go up Waterworks Valley, which will be closed from Hamptonne to St Aubin’s inner road from 8.45am to 10.30am. They will then loop around St John’s Manor and through St Mary’s Village, with drivers going west diverted between St Mary and St John.

St Ouen, according to organisers, is one of the pinch points of the events because runners go in two directions, meaning “a significant number of roads will be closed” and drivers have been asked to make alternative travel arrangements.

This includes St Ouen’s village and routes to St Mary and Greve de Lecq.

Organisers said they “strongly advise that no spectators should travel by car to St Ouen to watch the race due to traffic congestion”.

Runners will be crossing the road at the Airport entrance, and organisers said: “Please give yourself extra time if you need to access the Airport.”

There will also be restrictions around La Pulente, Corbiere and St Aubin’s Harbour, no parking at the St Brélade Parish Hall, and support vehicles using the Railway Track and the promenade and cycle lane along Victoria Avenue.

Organisers also warned runners’ friends and families that “under no circumstances” they should follow them with a car, bike or motorbike.

“This could be deemed as an unfair advantage and the runner being supported could face disqualification,” they said.
