ISLANDERS may have noticed a familiar sight missing from Jersey’s roads this summer after the distinctive open-top Beach Bus was withdrawn from service due to its age.
The colourful bus previously operated on the seasonal Route 14 between Liberation Station and St Brelade’s Bay, offering Islanders and visitors unobstructed views of the coast and St Aubin.
LibertyBus director Kevin Hart said: “Unfortunately, we have had to withdraw the Beach Bus due to its age, which is a real shame as this summer has been perfect weather.”
However, the Route 14 service remains in operation, with a standard double-decker bus running every hour in place of the Beach Bus.
Route 12A, which also serves St Brelade’s Bay, has returned to its increased summer frequency of every 30 minutes.
Mr Hart said: “The frequency of buses remains the same this year as when we had the Beach Bus on the road.
“We have seen more passengers heading down to St Brelade’s on the whole due to the weather as it’s a very weather-dependent area.”
He added: “In the future, we will be looking to bring a ‘Beach Bus’ back into operation; however, I can’t say when this will be as yet.”
Michelle Harbon, owner of beachfront convenience shop Charrien Stores, said the bus had benefited both visitors and businesses in St Brelade’s Bay.
“The Beach Bus was a nice addition to the bay over the last few summers. It was helpful for tourists and fun for families,” she said.
“It brought and attracted more passengers down to the beach, which was brilliant for local shops, cafes and restaurants.”
Ms Harbon said she looked forward to seeing the Beach Bus return to the bay in the future.
