JERSEY Heritage has launched a new set of free activity booklets to turn children into “Heritage Hunters” during the summer holidays.
The booklets aim to encourage Islanders to explore castles, museums and other historic places while solving puzzles and discovering fascinating facts.
There is a different workbook for six Jersey Heritage sites: Elizabeth Castle, Mont Orgueil, Hamptonne Country Life Museum, La Hougue Bie, the Maritime Museum and Jersey Museum.
As families walk around each site, they can answer questions, complete activities and learn about the history on display.
The activities are different at each location. At Elizabeth Castle, children can look out for wildlife living around the fortress.
At the Maritime Museum, they can even try singing a sea shanty – a traditional song once sung by sailors – before writing their own final verse.
Anyone who finishes a workbook can collect a special sticker from the site reception. There are six different stickers to collect, one for each location.
Jersey Heritage says the workbooks are a chance for young people to spend time outdoors, put away their electronic devices for a while and enjoy exploring the Island’s history with their families.
A version is also being created for Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies later this year to help them earn their Local History badges.
The workbooks are free to pick up at the visitor sites, although normal entry prices still apply.
Jersey Heritage members and children under six can visit for free.
