JERSEY football has received another boost after teenager Joey O’Toole signed his first professional contract with Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton – joining fellow islander Laiith Fairnie at the club.

The 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal until the summer of 2027 after impressing during a trial spell that began in January before a successful pre-season with the first team.

O’Toole, who has developed through the Jersey FA Performance Centre and starred for St Paul’s, becomes the second Jersey player to sign professionally for Morton this summer after former Birmingham City academy player Laiith Fairnie also secured a deal at Cappielow.

The prospect of two young Jersey footballers progressing together at the same professional club represents another encouraging milestone for the island’s player development pathway.

A creative attacking midfielder capable of playing further forward, O’Toole arrives in Scotland following an outstanding campaign in local football, highlighted by a hat-trick in Jersey’s Under-18 Muratti victory.

Morton manager Ian Murray believes the teenager has plenty of room to develop as he begins life in the professional game.

“He’s still a young player with plenty of development ahead of him,” Murray told the club’s official website.

“The plan is to continue working with him and, hopefully, get him out on loan to play regular first-team football.”

For O’Toole, the move represents the next step in a promising career, while Jersey supporters will now have two young islanders to follow as they look to establish themselves in Scottish professional football.
