AN area of St Ouen has been cordoned off while asbestos removal work is carried out.
Islanders noticed the restricted area on the Five Mile Road, opposite Jersey Pearl, over the weekend, with warning signs stating: “Asbestos removal in progress” and “No access for unauthorised persons”.
The signs also advise that anyone handling the material must wear respiratory equipment and protective overalls.
The closure prompted speculation on social media, with some users suggesting asbestos-contaminated building materials had been fly-tipped at the site.
However, the States of Jersey Police told the JEP yesterday that they had not received any recent reports relating to asbestos being fly-tipped in the area.
A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure and Environment said: “Reports of small quantities of cement-bonded asbestos have been found in an area of the Five Mile Road in St Ouen. Officers from Natural Environment arranged to clean up the area today [Monday].
“Should the public see anything suspected to be asbestos, please do not pick it up, contact the Parish who will identify the landowner.”
