A JERSEY College for Girls alumna and long-serving Law Officer has been appointed as Jersey’s new Solicitor General.
Advocate Victoria Bell’s appointment was approved by The King on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, and confirmed in the States Assembly on Friday morning.
Advocate Bell succeeds Matthew Jowitt, who earlier this year became Jersey’s Attorney General when his predecessor, Mark Temple, was named Deputy Bailiff.
A Jersey College for Girls alumna, Advocate Bell studied English at the University of Exeter before converting to law. She was admitted as a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in 2009 and as an advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey in 2016.
She has worked at the Law Officers’ Department since 2009 and was appointed Senior Legal Adviser in 2024.
Commenting on her appointment, Advocate Bell said: “I feel deeply honoured to have the opportunity to serve as His Majesty’s Solicitor General of Jersey.
“I look forward very much to maintaining the excellent standards set by my predecessor Matthew Jowitt KC and working with him and all of my highly talented and accomplished colleagues at the Law Officers’ Department.”
The Solicitor General is one of the Crown Officers responsible for providing legal advice to the Government of Jersey and representing the public interest in the Island’s courts.
