AFRICA Awareness Week in Jersey is due to kick off from today with a full schedule of food, music, events and workshops celebrating cultures from across the continent – and Islanders of all backgrounds are invited to join.

From Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 May, Friends of Africa Jersey will be holding workshops in schools and a care home.

Then, on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 May, they will be taking over the Royal Square with the fair that has now become tradition – featuring food, invited musicians and fashion, each day from 4pm to 10pm.

And to wrap up the week, the charity’s annual African Gala Dinner will take place at the Pomme d’Or Hotel on Saturday 23 May. Tickets for the event are available for individuals and corporate tables, starting at £90.

Chairman of Friends of Africa Jersey, Washington Gwatizdo, said he was looking forward to “the music, the dancing, the food and culture, the flavour”.

2026 will mark the 11th edition of Africa Week, which Mr Gwatizdo explained had over the years helped both recent migrants to Jersey feel less isolated, while allowing Islanders to gain a better understanding of the cultures of many of the people performing essential roles in the community.

He added that it was also beneficial for young children with family from Africa to see their cultures being reflected in the community.

“It’s really important for Islanders to understand a bit of the culture and heritage of the people moving [to Jersey],” he said, adding that they were often in “the most critical roles in the Island,” he said.

He added: “The world is becoming much more divided, we know that, but actually, we are one people.

“It’s important that people get the opportunity to open to these cultures, get to understand their neighbour, get to understand their colleague.”
