BOAT owners have asked Ports of Jersey to consider appointing a seasonal harbourmaster to help inject some “TLC” into Gorey Harbour.
Gorey Boat Owners Association chair Barry Faudemer said the request had been raised with harbourmaster Captain Bill Sadler.
It forms part of wider efforts by the GBOA to ensure the “iconic location” is looked after.
“We said, if you put your deep water moorings down … you could ask a seasonal harbourmaster to collect dues,” Mr Faudemer said.
The GBOA has previously raised concerns about the need to implement a “vision” for the future of Gorey Harbour, which Mr Faudemer described as suffering a “managed decline”.
He cited problems with lighting, rubbish and derelict buildings as some of the current issues.
His comments come as Ports prepares for the removal of the deteriorating landing stage at the end of Gorey Pier.
Mr Faudemer reiterated the GBOA’s fear that, without plans to also demolish the old customs building, there was a risk of a “La Folie Inn-type scenario”.
“If your going to take the [landing stage] down, let’s have a vision for Gorey of what could be achieved,” he said.
“We fully appreciate that funding is a major factor, but with such an iconic location it is possible – we think – to generate income.
“You’re going to need somebody there to collect it and, if they are going to be there collecting it, they can also do some TLC of the harbour.”
Captain Sadler told the JEP in December that, while the initial focus was on making sure the pier is “safe and secure”, the “vision for Gorey” would be looked at during later phases of work.
