A RENEWED warning about sea safety has been issued after lifeguards staged multiple rescues at St Ouen’s Bay.
The RNLI said that several inexperienced surfers had got into difficulty during the recent period of high tides and heavy sea conditions.
Jake Elms, lead lifeguard supervisor, said that during spring tides, and particularly during periods of large swell, the sea was liable to rise quickly, intensifying rip currents and reducing safe exit points along bays and headlands.
“People enjoying the waters around Jersey are encouraged to check tide times and sea conditions to ensure they are suitable for their ability and experience,” he said. “Using lifeguarded beaches and staying within the supervised areas marked by flags can significantly reduce risk.”
After daily patrols at Le Braye during the recent Easter holidays, lifeguards will only be present at the site on Saturdays and Sundays until seven-day cover resumes on Saturday 2 May. For other beaches, RNLI lifeguard cover for the summer season will start on Saturday 23 May at El Tico, Grève De Lecq, St Brelade’s Bay, Plemont and the Watersplash.
