Ogier explains how, through donations, partnerships and empowering its people, it helps to build sustainable communities

AT Ogier, we recognise our collective responsibility to support the communities where we live and work, contributing to social sustainability in all our jurisdictions. Building sustainable communities isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s also good business sense.

How do we do this? Through charitable donations, community partnerships and empowering our people to volunteer and fundraise. Our focus is on supporting organisations that help individuals facing barriers in their daily lives, including those with low incomes or who are experiencing education, employment or health challenges. Over the past year, we have made donations to a wide range of charities, such as NSPCC, Healing Waves, Jersey Employment Trust, Focus on Mental Illness, Beresford Street Kitchen and Kairos Arts.

Our efforts are driven by a dedicated team of colleagues who volunteer on their local CSR committees and build relationships with charity partners.

In this article, we’re pleased to feature three of our Jersey community partners and share how, together, we’re helping to make a meaningful difference in our island community.

Jersey Child Care Trust

The principles of flight may seem quite distant from the nursery classroom – but last year more than 200 nursery-school children from across Jersey embarked on a unique journey of discovery about aircraft and the thrills of flight as part of our long-running collaboration with Jersey Child Care Trust.

Ogier volunteers share their love of reading with Rouge Bouillon School pupils

The Ogier Engineer programme involves ten island nurseries, combining fun activities with hands-on learning experiences delivered by 20 employee volunteers – known as the Ogier Engineers – and JCCT colleagues.

Ogier also contributes to the JCCT’s “Help a Life Take Flight” campaign, which enables every child in Jersey – including those with disabilities, development needs and from low-income families – to have access to nursery care.

JCCT’s programmes and services director Alice Bennion said: “Our partnership with Ogier has not only lent us crucial support for the programmes we deliver within the community.

“It has also fostered a truly rewarding experience for Ogier Engineers and some of the youngest members of the Jersey community, and is an incredible platform for children, early-years practitioners and corporate volunteers to connect, inspire and learn from one another.”

Every Child Our Future

For nine years, Ogier has supported Every Child Our Future’s successful Ready to Read initiative, an important programme where volunteers engage weekly with pupils in Years 1 and 2 in supported reading practice sessions.

Earlier this year, we went a step further and became the programme’s inaugural sponsor.

Our funding will enable Every Child Our Future to continue to recruit and train volunteers who provide this one-to-one reading practice for children across Jersey’s primary schools and help them to build their skills and confidence.

Our dedicated team of 18 volunteers supports pupils across six classes at Rouge Bouillon School and sees first-hand the positive impact of the sessions.

Every Child Our Future’s chief executive Cris Lakeman said: “When children develop reading skills and a love of reading, the benefits extend beyond the classroom. Reading boosts academic success, empathy and wellbeing, therefore helping communities to thrive. Ensuring that every child has the opportunity to read is a shared responsibility.

“Through our partnership with Ogier, we can continue to support Jersey children to experience the joy of reading, opening up a world of possibilities for them.”

Grow Jersey

A team of volunteers from the firm help to build raised planting beds for Grow Jersey

Rooted in a shared commitment to environmental and social wellbeing, Ogier has recently partnered with Grow Jersey, an innovative local regenerative smallholding dedicated to growing food with – and for – the community.

Through our community investment fund, Ogier has sponsored a lane of fruit and nut trees and purchased two wheelbarrows. Our volunteers are also getting hands-on, building raised beds and caring for the orchard.

Grow Jersey’s co-founder and designer Sheena Brockie said: “Ogier has shown us incredible support by not only providing financial commitment, but also by organising many groups to come and volunteer time at Grow.

“Their dedication and involvement are greatly appreciated and serve as a fantastic example of how businesses can contribute to community wellbeing.”
