ISLANDERS are being urged to take extra care when visiting open land during the hot weather, after firefighters tackled a large blaze at Grève de Lecq on Thursday afternoon.
The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze, which broke out on a headland at around 4pm, covered an area approximately 20 by 100 metres.
Two fire appliances and a water carrier were sent to the scene, where crews used medium jets to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Firefighters remained on site to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the area was safe.
With dry conditions expected to continue, Watch Commander Richard Ryan issued a warning: “Fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly in dry conditions.”
He urged the public to exercise caution in open areas to help reduce the risk of further incidents.
BBQ weather warning
The Fire Service have also been warning Islanders to take extra care when it comes to beach BBQs, and shared this advice:
- Hot surfaces: The ground beneath a disposable BBQ gets extremely hot – hot enough to cause serious burns.
- After cooking: Always check the area where your BBQ was placed – it could still burn bare feet or paws. Cool it down with water or dig it over with cold sand.
- Disposal danger: Never throw a disposable BBQ in the bin until it’s completely cool – even warm coals can cause fires.
