Major work to redevelop the shop is currently under way and the company said that ‘unforeseen challenges’ had meant that two trading areas, the Beauty Salon and the brasserie restaurant Upstairs at de Gruchy, have had to close for five months.

De Gruchy is spending £15 million on the redevelopment, which will double the size of the store.

The refurbished site is due to include one of the biggest Next retail outlets in Britain.

The number of new jobs that will be created by the newly developed shop is, according to the company, ‘dependent on trading conditions and public support of the new store’.
